Lodge No.6783 was consecrated on Tuesday 8th February 1949 by the
then Provincial Grand Master, Brother Arthur Foster. There were 21 Founder Members. They agreed that the object of the Lodge should be to provide a Masonic Home for Masons who came to Lytham St. Annes after having been Members of Lodges in other areas of the U.K. or beyond, and from other Constitutions. In other words it was primarily established as a JOINING LODGE. In addition, it was also agreed that the Lodge be permitted to have one Candidate per year, in order that the Worshipful Master could carry out his duty to perform Ceremonies. The Lodge Celebrated it's 50th Anniversary on Tuesday 23rd February 1999, the next Regular Meeting following the Consecration date, in the presence of the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Steven P. J. Reid. The Worshipful Master and Brethren of Melita Lodge, extend a warm welcome to Brethren of this and other Provinces and Constitutions and would be delighted to receive any Brother into the Lodge, when visiting the Fylde area or considering moving to this locality. The name of 'Melita' was suggested by Rev.Canon A.L.J.Shields during a conversation with Tom Manning, a Founder Member and first Worshipful Master of the Lodge. He referred to the journey of St. Paul. He said that Myra was the place where Paul and the Prisoners embarked on their way to Italy, and, after sheltering at 'Fairhaven' for a few days they continued on their way, but the storm still raged and finally swept them onto the Island of Melita (or as we know it today - Malta). The Island became their home for three months and the resident population (Barbarians) were very kind and hospitable. He was sure that Melita would be a Lodge which tried to find a new home for those Brethren who had moved to Lytham St. Annes and where they would be as happy as they had been in their Mother Lodge. The Lodge Crest, chosen by the Founders and designed by Bro. Dewhurst of Preston, is an illustration of St. Paul's shipwreck and is here depicted on the Lodge Banner which was donated by Douglas Lowe, on 24 May 1997, to celebrate his 60 years in Freemasonry. The Banner was subsequently dedicated at the Regular Meeting of the Lodge on 23 September 1997. Since 1985, Melita Lodge has had a strong fraternal association and friendship with 'The Athole Lodge No.384', Scottish Constitution. This has resulted in some twelve visitations between the two Lodges North and South of the Border.
